REIKI
Reiki is a Japanese word; Rei-meaning "higher power" and Ki-meaning "universal life force energy."
Reiki is an ancient healing art that may have been lost for eternity if not for Dr Mikaomi Usui (Japan) who re-discovered it in the late 19th century. After surviving cholera , Usui became involved with a group called Rei Jyutso Ka near Mount Kurama Yama and spent much time studying ancient spiritual, medical and Buddhist knowledge in Kyoto's monasteries and libraries. There is a school of thought that he found a manuscript entitled 'The Tantra of the Lightning Flash' particularly revealing in that it outlines a healing method practised in 7th century Tibet. Dr Usui climbed Mt Kurama Yama on a retreat to understand more through contemplating on the ancient knowledge he had gathered. It was during his time there that he received instantaneous empowerments direct from the Universal Life Force. He spent several years studying, developing and further refining Reiki, giving it form and structure. He opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo, founded a Reiki Society and incorporated the five principles propagated by the Emperor of Meiji for whom he had great respect.
There are several variations of the wording of the principles which Dr Usui's students were directed to state aloud every morning and evening. All are honourable and carry much wisdom and I present the following version:
Just for today, do not anger
Just for today, do not worry
Honour your teachers, parents and elders
Earn your living honestly
Show gratitude toward all living things
The clinic was so successful that he soon had to open another in Nakano and he was in much demand as the popularity of Reiki grew. His level of commitment and workload had a detrimental effect on Dr Usui's own health and he died on 9th March 1926 after charging one of his students, Dr Chujiro Hayashi with the responsibility of continuing the Reiki tradition. Dr Hayashi in turn passed on the responsibility to a woman named Hawaya Takata who was, until the 1970s the only western proponent of Reiki.
Since then it has continued to be shared across the world. Anyone can channel Reiki as it is handed down through lineage by an attunement process from Master Teacher to student.
How Reiki Works
Reiki is a particular frequency of Universal energy channelled by a Practitioner to re-balance the recipients energy fields to help in the prevention and cure of illness, disease, anxiety and crisis. This energy works with the underlying cause of a problem which can result in quicker more effective healing. The energy can encourage healing by flowing to wherever needed in the body and aura to help you. The rate of healing will be depend on the focus of Practitioner and client and on their receptiveness to the energy and accepting change. A treatment may result in emotional release, quickening of physical healing, release of tension, reduction in pain, increase in personal energy and a sense of deep relaxation.
